While Nantucket has always been a popular summer destination, the island's close proximity to major US cities while feeling far away has made it even more desirable in 2021. This increase in popularity along with fewer homeowners renting, renters postponing last year's trip to this year, and new renters booking early has made finding a rental more challenging, but far from impossible.
Don't let all this deter you, there are still properties available. Below are some items to consider when booking your trip in a tight rental market.
Flexibility is Key
The Dates of Your Vacation
If possible, expand the date range that you can stay within. For example, if you are looking for a week in July your options increase greatly if you can stay any week during the month as opposed to a specific starting day.
Nantucket Off-Season
For many, the summer months of July and August are the only times they can travel to Nantucket. If you are one of the fortunate who can come in the Fall or Spring, it is worth considering. September for example is incredible. The air and water are still warm, the beaches are empty and many properties have reduced rates. With fewer people visiting there are more rentals to choose from.
Island Location
Try not to focus on a specific area. For example, if you are looking for a house in Madaket within walking distance to the beach consider looking at areas such as Surfside or Micomet that have similar beaches, or try Tom Nevers or Sconset. Part of Nantucket's charm is the uniqueness of its different areas, if you are unfamiliar with the island your rental agent can discuss these differences and what they have to offer.
Rental Requirements
We understand that a rental is your home for your time on Nantucket and needs to fulfill some requirements. That being said, try and separate out amenities that are requirements from ones that you would like, but could live without. For example, while your rental must have wireless internet access, you would like it to have an outdoor shower but could do without if needed.
Your Rental Agent
More likely than not, booking a rental on Nantucket will involve a rental agent. Most homeowners find renting through a real estate agency a beneficial option. Reach out to us early in your planning process to take advantage of the benefits of working with an agent such as answering questions and concerns, island advice, finding rentals, special requests, assisting with changes, and more. Availability is constantly fluctuating as bookings change and new properties are added. Your rental agent has access to the most up-to-date information.
